Do DIY Recipes Like Sugar and Vinegar Really Work?

When you’re out of flower food, DIY solutions like sugar and vinegar in vase water are a popular go-to. But do they actually keep cut flowers fresh—or do more harm than good?

We’ve tested it extensively, and while this kitchen-sink method has been floating around for decades, the results just don’t live up to the promise.

What DIY Sugar and Vinegar Cut Flower Food Is Supposed to Do

In theory:

  • Sugar provides a carbohydrate source to feed the blooms.

  • Vinegar is meant to lower the pH and suppress bacteria.

Together, this combo is meant to mimic commercial flower food—but it has some serious drawbacks.

🚫 What Actually Happens in Real-World Use

We’ve put this method to the test in dozens of vase trials, and here’s what we found:

The Sugar Feeds Flowers… and Bacteria

Sugar helps flowers open faster—but in unbalanced doses, it speeds up decay by feeding bacteria in the water just as quickly.

Vinegar Isn’t a Strong Enough Preservative

While vinegar may lower pH temporarily, it’s not consistent or effective enough to stop microbial growth. In fact, our tests showed no improvement in flower lifeand in some cases, vinegar made delicate flowers wilt even faster.

DIY Proportions Are Risky

The “1 teaspoon sugar + 1 teaspoon vinegar per quart” rule is vague and doesn’t account for flower type, vase size, or environmental conditions (like warm summer weather). The wrong ratios can burn the stem, destroy petals, or make your flowers droop early.

What Our Testing Showed

We tested vinegar-based recipes alongside commercial flower food and our own Flower Boosters formula. Flowers in vinegar solutions:

  • Drooped earlier than even plain water changed regularly. While the sugar helped, the vinegar was just not strong enough to overcome the bacteria that formed.

  • Had cloudier water and more stem rot. When bacteria takes over the stems pay the price!

  • Smelled unpleasant after 48 hours
